Principal's Message

      Doug Taylor - Principal

Vern Patrick Families-

As we approach the end of the calendar year, it's hard to believe how quickly time has flown by!  As the holiday season is upon us, our school is full of excitement and festive cheer.  I would like to share a few updates and highlights of successes so far at Vern Patrick.

1.  As I write this letter, our average daily attendance is the highest in the Redmond School District at 94.4%!  It is up nearly 3% from this time last year!  In addition, our percentage of students who show chronic absenteeism is down nearly 11% from this time last year as well!

Attendance is one of the largest factors in academic success.  Thank you all for your support in making attendance a priority for your student!

2.  Our CLAW (Caring Leaders Always Will) student leadership and self-manager group is beginning to take shape.  There have been 13 students who have been identified by school staff as true leaders in our building and completed the process to become a CLAW member.  These are students who are consistently safe, respectful, and responsible in all aspects at school.  We have another 27 students who are working through the application and recommendation process!

The aim is to recognize students who are always displaying positive behavior and to develop a leadership team that can support and encourage their peers to create a positive learning environment for all at school.

3.  Our Read-a-thon has been a great success!  Our students read over 124,302 minutes and raised over $7,700 for our school!  Thank you for all your support in this fundraiser.  The goal is to use the funds to create art opportunities for all of our students in the spring.  We will be having an assembly December 8th to celebrate and acknowledge our top readers and the students who fundraised the most.

A big shout-out to our librarian, Jasmine Kleckler and Kelly Martinez, our PTC president, for their hard work organizing and implementing this fundraiser to support our students; it is not a small or easy task!

4.  As inclement weather begins to set in, please make sure your child comes to school dressed appropriately.  Even with the colder temperatures, they should still plan on going outside for recess.  If you need assistance in getting a warm coat or other winter clothes, please reach out to our FAN advocate, Jordan Chandler, at jordan.chandler@redmondschools.org.  Please note that we have several coats that are left outside at recess and are currently sitting in the lost and found.  If your child is missing theirs, please feel free to take a look before or after school.

Please also keep in mind the road and sidewalk conditions and give yourself plenty of time to get to school.  Despite the weather, we still begin at 9:00 am.  Please plan accordingly to get to school safely on time.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.  Wishing you all a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season!

Thanks,

Doug Taylor

DECEMBER MESSAGE
Being active is part of living a healthy lifestyle.
Children should do least 60 minutes of activities that
get their heart pumping every day. Students have
many chances to be active at school, help them
meet their goal by finding activities that fit with
what you usually do. Remember to have fun! Give
some of the simple ideas listed below a try this
month.
Indoor Activities:
• 5-minute dance party,
• jog in place,
• jumping jacks,
• push-ups, sit ups during TV commercials,
• hallway hopscotch
Outdoor Activities:
• park further away from the destination,
• go for a walk as a family,
• check out the dry canyon trail on foot or by
scooter or bike.
Want more fun and healthy ideas to do as a family?
Check out Bingo for activities to try during the
school break.

JANUARY MESSAGE:
Celebrate the time and effort you have put into to
the health of your family! Healthy children
contribute to healthy communities in the future.
What do you do to keep on track with healthy
choices? Setting a SMART goal can help! Be Specific,
make sure you can Measure if you have done it or
not, make it Attainable, not too out of reach, make it
Relevant to you and your life, set a Timeline for
when you will complete the goal. Meeting a goal
gives us a great feeling of success, be kind to
yourself -- start small and be SMART.
